MEMPHIS — Thomas Detry played his first 10 holes Sunday at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in seven under par, but the shot he might remember best in his final round at TPC Southwind is his approach into the 13th green that settled 74 feet from the pin.

OK, that doesn’t sound like a particularly stellar iron shot from 192 yards, but you’d have to see it to appreciate how good it was.

Detry, 55th in the world, hooked his drive well left on the par-4, dogleg right hole, and his ball settled underneath a temporary mesh fence. He took a full cut at his second shot, and somehow not only made great contact but also got the ball in the air and online to the green. It went well past the flagstick to the right fringe, and after an excellent lag to four feet, he converted the par.

Doubtful there will be a more entertaining par we’ll see the rest of the day. Or all throughout the FedEx Cup Playoffs, for that matter.

A native of Belgium, Detry, 31, failed to take advantage of that swell escape, bogeying two holes coming in for a five-under 65. He finished the tournament at two-under 278, but that was good enough to ensure that he would move on to next week’s BMW Championship. The top 50 advance to the second leg of the playoffs at Castle Pines in Castle Rock, Colo., and Detry was 41st when he holed out.
